6 Unconventional College Majors You Never Knew You Wanted to Try

unconventional college majorsUnless you’ve been living under a rock the past…oh, I don’t know…seven years or so, then you’ve heard the expression “there’s an app for that.” Think of the most ridiculous thing in the world, and you can probably find it in the app store. Just feel like popping a zit? There’s an app for that. Gross, maybe, but there is an app for that. Want an app that lets you add cats to any photo? Yep, you can do that too (and let’s face it, who doesn’t want that app?). There’s even an app whose sole purpose is saying “yo.” This isn’t a joke.

As much as you’ve heard this expression, you’ve probably never heard the one “there’s a major for that.” Well, maybe now you will. Institutions of higher education everywhere offer long catalogs of college majors for undergrads – so long, in fact, that you may not even realize some of the most interesting things they have to offer. Syracuse University just added an undergraduate major in Sports Analytics. Beginning August 2017 (I’m looking at you, high school juniors), SU will make their Sports Analytics students experts in math, statistics, research methodology, sport economics, database management, finance, and computer programming. This will allow graduates to bring their expertise to multiple sports organizations. So many colleges and large universities offer a wide variety of majors that you never knew existed. If you’ve dreamt it, there’s probably a major for it.

If you’re like the majority of sixteen and seventeen-year-olds, you probably have no idea what you want to do with your life. You’re not excited by accounts receivable or modern medicine, and hey, not all of us can be accountants or doctors. Some of us take a more unique route and that’s totally okay. It is possible to find a major that will have people scratching their heads saying “I didn’t even know you could major in that,” and you can do it at some of the most elite universities. We know you’re dying at this point to know some of the weird (and awesome) majors that are available to you at top colleges. So, we did the dirty work for you and dug through the internet to find some of the most interesting majors out there.

  1. Do you love learning about the Great Pyramid of Giza, King Tut, hieroglyphics, and all of the other mind-boggling information ancient Egypt has to offer? Lucky for you, Brown University offers a major in Egyptology and Assyriology.
  2. Maybe you went to your first Tartan Day parade and developed a passion for bag-piping. Your passion can carry you all the way to a college degree in Bagpipe Performance (yep, that’s right, that weird instrument that the guys with the kilts play) from Carnegie Mellon University.
  3. Since we’re on the topic of performing arts, we might as well mention that there is a Puppet Arts major at the Univeristy of Connecticut. So, if R.L. Stine’s Night of the Living Dummy didn’t freak you out and plague you with puppet nightmares for life, then maybe you could succeed as a professional puppeteer!
  4. For all of you STEM people out there, Cornell University offers a Viticulture and Enology (V&E) major. This offers students a hands-on experience to gain expertise in the wine industry.
  5. And let’s throw it back to the music geeks with American University’s Audio Technology degree program. This program combines science with art to help students learn all about audio production and technology while offering them assets in a variety of fields to give them a well-rounded breadth of experience.
  6. Lastly, if you seriously can’t resist a cupcake (and let’s face it, who can?) and have some interest in entrepreneurship, then a Bakery Science and Management degree from Kansas State University could be the right offering for you!

Just remember that no dream is too big. If you want to become an expert in frosting cakes or giving puppet shows, then perhaps one of these unique and interesting majors will draw your attention! Good luck with the college search and remember, you don’t have to go into college with a major, but at least you know you have a huge variety of options available.
