The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is always among the first American universities to release its supplemental essay prompts, and this year is no exception. As a forerunner in the college application release pack, UNC’s prompts can often help set the tone for what to expect from other schools. Last year, the array of prompts asked students a range of questions from the straightforward community essay prompt to the quirky prompt that asked applicants to imagine their own TED Talks, leading the pack of offbeat questions that were to follow from other schools. The 2016-17 UNC essay prompts tell a slightly different story. With fewer options to choose from, applicants will be asked to examine the deepest recesses of their character, their hopes, and their dreams. It seems that perhaps the new Coalition Application has also helped set the tone for this year’s application cycle, with its touted focus on meaningful community contributions over flashier extracurriculars.
