The 2017-18 Yale Supplemental Essay Prompts are Out!

You’ve been scouring the internet for weeks, maybe even months, trying to get a jump start on your Yale application to ensure your essays are imbued with that Ivy League-worthy je ne sais quois. Well, look no further. The supplements ready — but are you ready for them? (We think you are!) This year’s application is especially exciting in that it provides different supplemental essay options for Common Application and Coalition Application users. Will these options ultimately impact your decision to use one platform or the other? (They might!) Regardless, take a look at the prompts below and get ready to elevate your essay game!

All incoming freshmen applying to Yale will answer the following questions:

1. Students at Yale have plenty of time to explore their academic interests before committing to one or more major fields of study. Many students either modify their original academic direction or change their minds entirely. As of this moment, what academic areas seem to fit your interests or goals most comfortably? Please indicate up to three from the list provided. Why do these areas appeal to you? (100 words or fewer)
2. What is it about Yale that has led you to apply? (125 words or fewer)
3. What inspires you? (35 words or fewer)
4. Yale’s residential colleges regularly host intimate conversations with guests representing a wide range of experiences and accomplishments. What person, past or present, would you invite to speak? What question would you ask? (35 words or fewer)
5. You are teaching a Yale course. What is it called? (35 words or fewer)
6. Most first-year Yale students live in suites of four to six people. What would you contribute to the dynamic of your suite? (35 words or fewer)

If you are applying via the Common Application, you have to choose two out of three prompts and respond with 250 words or fewer. The prompts are:

1. What do you most enjoy learning?
2. Reflect on your engagement with a community to which you belong. How do you feel you have contributed to this community?
3. Write on something you would like us to know about you that you have not conveyed elsewhere in your application.

If you are applying via the Coalition Application, you will have to choose one out of two essay prompts to respond to in 300 words or fewer AND submit an audio file, video, picture, or document of your creation that relates to your essay. The prompts are:

1. What do you most enjoy learning?
2. Reflect on your engagement with a community to which you belong. How do you feel you have contributed to this community?

So which will you choose? Coke or Pepsi? Chocolate or vanilla? Common App or Coalition? Whatever your decision, take advantage of this early prompt release and get writing!
