Back in the UK, UCAS is pretty straightforward: you pick a course, show you’ve got the grades, address three straightforward essay questions regarding your academic interests and relevant experience, and that’s largely that. Stateside, competitive colleges want the full picture. Admissions is looking at your essays, what you do after school, if you volunteer, and generally trying to get a sense of who you are as a person, not just a student. Mapping Out Your Application

To submit a stellar U.S. college application, getting organized early is key. Here’s a rough plan:

• Summer Before Year 13: Start researching colleges. Check out all sorts of schools, from small liberal arts colleges to big state universities. What feels like a good fit for you? While taking breaks from research, write your Common App personal statement (more on this later!). One of the many wonderful things about the Common App essay is you do not need to know where you will be applying or what you will be majoring in before you write it!
• Autumn (Fall): Firm up your college list, take the SAT or ACT if you haven’t already, draft your supplemental essays and activity list descriptions, and send in those Early Decision/Early Action applications.T. Early Decision is a binding agreement, so make sure you really love the school if you apply ED.
• Winter: Time to submit your Regular Decision applications (usually by January 1). Aim for a balanced list with some schools where you’re pretty sure you’ll get in, some where you’ve got a decent shot, and a couple of reach schools.
• Spring: Decisions are in! Fingers crossed, you’ll get some good news.

What About Exams? The Testing Lowdown

Okay, so what’s the deal with all these tests? Here’s what UK students need to know:

SAT/ACT Tests

• Necessary?: Not every U.S. college requires SAT or ACT scores, but many still ask students to submit them.
• Test-Optional Trend: Loads of colleges are going test-optional now, letting you decide whether to send your results. If you skip the tests, they’ll focus more on your grades, activities, and essays.
• Other Options?: A few colleges will accept other test scores, like from the International Baccalaureate (IB) or A-levels, but it’s not as common.

Proving You Can Hack the Language

• If English Isn’t Your Mother Tongue: You’ll generally need to prove you’re proficient at English with a test like TOEFL, IELTS or PTE Academic.
• Getting a Waiver: Some colleges might waive the English test if you ace the Reading and Writing bits of the SAT or ACT.
