International Students: What You Need to Know When Applying from Canada to Schools in the USA

Ivy Divider

So, you’re thinking about going south for your college years? Exciting! It’s a big decision, and even though Canada and the U.S. are close, the college application process can feel like a whole different game (you may even swap your hockey puck for a baseball!). The good news is, American universities give you a chance to show off more than just your grades, and College Essay Advisors is here to help you make sure your application represents who you really are and why you’d be a great addition to their campus.

Decoding the Differences Between the Canadian and US College Application Process

The Holistic View

Back in Canada, things are pretty focused: you aim for good grades, engage in extracurriculars, possibly write an essay or two, and apply. Down south, colleges want the whole story. They’re looking at stories from your life in your essays, how you spend your free time, whether you volunteer, and are basically trying to get a sense of you as a person, not just a statistic or academic ranking. That’s where a thoughtful and unique college essay comes in. It’s your chance to make a real impression among similarly qualified applicants. Think of it as your spotlight moment, showing them who you are beyond the report card.

Common Hurdles

One thing a lot of Canadian students find surprising is the essay style in the U.S. Admissions wants you to be personal, tell stories, and really open up about your personal growth and experiences in your personal statement. It’s less like writing a research paper and more like having a candid conversation in your own voice. Also, while Canadians are familiar with extracurriculars, American colleges often put even more emphasis on them. So, if you haven’t been super involved outside of class, you’ll need to get creative and think outside of the box about what has shaped you as a person.

But don’t worry; with a compelling essay, you can highlight the experiences you have had in a way that truly resonates. And remember, College Essay Advisors helps 95% of our international students get into at least one of their top three schools, we know what it takes to craft essays that get noticed!

Creating Your Application Game Plan

To ace the U.S. college application, getting organized early is key. Here’s a rough plan to follow:

  • Summer Before Your Final Year: Start researching colleges and write your Common App personal statement. Check out all sorts of schools, from small liberal arts colleges to big state universities. What feels like a good fit for you? While taking breaks from research, write your Common App personal statement (more on this later!). One of the many wonderful things about the Common App essay is you do not need to know where you will be applying or what you will be majoring in before you write it!
  • Fall: Firm up your college list, take the SAT or ACT if you haven’t already, draft your supplemental essays and activity list descriptions, and send in those Early Decision/Early Action applications. Early Decision is a binding agreement, so make sure you really love the school if you apply ED.
  • Winter: Time to send in your Regular Decision applications (usually by January 1). Aim for a balanced list: some schools where you’re likely to get in, some where you’ve got a good shot, and a couple of dream schools.
  • Spring: Decision time! Hopefully, you’ll get some great news.

What About Exams? The Testing Rundown

Alright, so what’s the deal with all these tests? Here’s what Canadian students need to know:

SAT/ACT

  • Do You Need It?: Not every U.S. college requires the SAT or ACT, but many still recommend submitting scores.
  • Test-Optional Trend: More and more colleges are going test-optional, letting you decide whether to send your results. If you skip the tests, they’ll focus more on your grades, activities, and essays.
  • Other Options?: Some colleges might consider other standardized tests, but it’s less common.

Demonstrating Your English Abilities

  • If English Isn’t Your First Language: You’ll typically need to show you’re proficient in English with a test like TOEFL, IELTS or PTE Academic.
  • Getting an Exemption: Some colleges might waive the English test if you do exceptionally well on the Reading and Writing sections of the SAT or ACT.
  • Get a Reader: We also recommend utilizing the revision offerings of College Essay Advisors to ensure your writing has no roadblocks for the reader and flows well.

The Other Essentials

  • Academic Records and Recommendations: You’ll need to send in your high school transcripts and letters of recommendation from teachers who can vouch for your abilities and character.
  • Your Personal Story: Your essays and personal statements are crucial. They’re where you let your personality shine and tell your story in your own words. It’s your chance to “be in the room” with admissions, so take your time and get sincere.

Time to Tell Your Story: The Essay Matters

The Common App Essay

We told you we’d revisit the increasingly important application essays! The Common App personal statement is your opportunity to let your personality shine. It’s not about listing accomplishments; instead, it’s about telling a story of how you’ve become the person you are today. We have a ton of resources to help applicants write their Common App essay, as well as expert Advisors who walk students from all over the world through the process one-on-one

Supplemental Essays

These college-specific essays require you to do your research and understand what each particular school offers. Let’s say you’re applying to the University of Michigan; talk about why their engineering program gets you excited and how you look forward to cheering as a Wolverine in the football stands.
