Help! I Used AI to Write My College Admissions Essay

Ivy Divider

So you used AI to write your college admissions essay—maybe several of your essays? And now you’re rethinking whether that was the right call. Maybe you’ve even been deferred or rejected from your top-choice school.

The good news is that there is still time for you to course correct before submitting AI-generated college essays that will negatively impact your chances of acceptance!

Why You Shouldn’t Use AI to Write Your College Admissions Essays

You Will Need Writing Skills in College

We know that universities are running college-level assignments through AI-detection software, which means you will need to rely on your own writing and creative thinking skills in college (and in life!) to excel. It’s integral to set yourself up for success by developing these skills before finishing high school.

Admissions Officers Can Tell

We’ve been hearing from admissions officers who’ve reported seeing an increase in submitted admissions essays that reek of AI intervention—and, believe us, they know one when they see one.

Admissions essays written with the help of AI are often rife with cliches, are incredibly redundant, and lack a noticeable human touch. Sure, it may have produced a “correctly written” essay, but you want the reader to be gripped by your story, not bored midway through with their eyes glazed over. Stories with heart get noticed, and we promise, you have it in you to write one of your own!

Your Essay Won’t Stand Out

Although a very cursory read of an admissions essay written with the help of AI can sound smart, they ultimately come off as very generic and prescribed, which makes sense given that the AI software is trying to produce something that sounds like an admissions essay without the content, context, or detail that actually makes for a stand-out application.

By using AI to write your essay, you are showing admissions that you are not willing to put time and thought into your application, displaying a lack of drive, interest, and likely, fit as a future student on their campus.

Your essay will sound like every other student’s who used AI, and as a result, will make you forgettable in the eyes of admissions officers.

Your Essay May Clash with Other Components of Your Application

AI is not perfect, and the software even generates material that may not be factual. We’ve seen essays that reference aspects of a summer job that directly contradict the students’ activity list descriptions, leaving holes in the application that won’t make sense to an admissions officer.

How to Fix an Essay Written With AI

Here at College Essay Advisors, we help students write distinct admissions essays that differentiate them from similarly qualified applicants. Our expert Advisors encourage applicants to use their authentic voices that AI cannot replicate (unless you’ve already published hundreds of essays online for AI to crawl to get a sense of your unique voice – in which case, why are using AI again?!).

In all likelihood, you will need to start your essay from scratch. We know that’s not the news you were hoping for, but if the essay has not been written using your own words, you owe it to yourself (and your chances of admission to your dream school) to take it from the top.

When writing your own essay, you can experiment with structure and form as well as metaphor and hook. Trust that you have an interesting story to tell (and a compelling way to tell it). And our fully human team can help you tell it starting our signature brainstorming process.

Remember, you speak and text in your authentic, unique voice every day. It’s that same voice that will help admissions to get to know you and determine your fit for their school beyond the grades, test scores, and other data points. Essays are their chance to “meet you” in your own words, so take advantage of that opportunity.

Don’t let your insecurities convince you that AI can write a more compelling essay about your own life than you can.
