Time Management Tips for College Applicants

Ivy Divider

You wake up, get ready, go to school, go to practice, go to work, spend some much needed time with your friends, and then you’re supposed to write a college essay?!?! We know, we get it. It can be difficult to not only find time to write your college essay, but use that time efficiently. So we put together three tips to help you get your college application in tip top shape!

Organize your Deadlines in a Document

Make a calendar or spreadsheet or anything that helps you keep track of important dates. The key to managing your time is knowing what you’re up against. By organizing all of your early decision, early action, regular decision, financial aid, honors college, and test scores submission deadlines, you’ll have a better grasp of how much time you have to get everything done.

Check for supplemental essays

Many students finish their personal statements and relax, thinking they’re all but ready to hit submit, when really, they have ten supplemental essays waiting outside their door. If you know how many essays you have to write, you can better prepare for unhurried, relaxed writing sessions.

Set a structured schedule

It’s easiest to blow off a chore when it’s loosely on your to-do list, but when it is scheduled as a part of your day, you get in the habit of doing it. Write every morning before school, brainstorm on the bus trips to soccer games, outline in study hall, or edit during late night Golden Girls reruns. You’ll be surprised how much you can get done if you commit to a block of time.
