To all of our graduating college seniors out there, we are truly sorry that your college experience is coming to an end in the middle of a worldwide health crisis. Though our job is mainly to support your efforts to get into the university of your dreams, we also love to hear from our students who have made it through all four years of undergrad and are ready to take on new challenges. With that in mind, we know almost all of you will be graduating virtually this year, if your college is still hosting a commencement ceremony. But what if, despite new social distancing rules, your graduation didn’t have to be an event celebrated in total isolation? What if, instead, you could ring in the next stage of your life with Zendaya, Lady Gaga, and even Michelle and Barack Obama?
Well, we’re here to tell you that those “what-ifs” are now your new reality! YouTube Originals, a channel on the video sharing platform that is currently featuring entertainment streams from various celebrities, is preparing to present “Dear Class of 2020” on Saturday, June 6th. The event, which is set to premiere at 12pm PST, will be opened with an hour of content from Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher initiative.
Both Obamas will headline the event and will each deliver their own commencement speeches to graduates, as well as an additional joint message from them both. Other commencement speakers will include Lady Gaga, K-Pop band BTS, former Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and Malala Yousafzai. There will even be a “crowd-sourced” commencement speech from former graduates worldwide, alongside interviews and stories from students just like you!
If speeches aren’t really your thing, don’t worry — there will be plenty of entertainment options too! Throughout the multi-hour event, special performances will be made by Alicia Keys, Kelly Rowland, Kerry Washington, Chloe x Halle, and Zendaya. There will be several YouTube creators present as well, such as The Try Guys, Dude Perfect, Jackie Aina, Mr. Kate, and AsapSCIENCE. YouTube will be releasing their full schedule of performances and speakers for this event on Sunday, May 17th.
Interested in getting involved with this event? Head on over to the “Dear Class of 2020” YouTube Page to sign your name and a message on the virtual Shout-Out board, and to set a reminder for the stream’s premiere! We at CEA wish all of you in this year’s graduating class the best of luck moving forward, and we hope that you enjoy celebrating all of your years of hard work with this one-of-a-kind celebration!
